Mount Rainier is one of my favorite places. The first time I visited was in October of 2016. That was only a day-trip from Seattle (59 miles southeast), but a wonderful experience even though we did NOT get to see Mt. Rainier. Like not at all. Not even a peek!
Here are some of the pictures from the initial trip. We had to idea that giant was hiding directly in front of us.
Mt. Rainier also called Tacoma or Tahoma in native language is a 14,411 ft active volcano last erupted in November of 1894.
I stayed at Cougar Rock Campground which was on the first come basis starting in September. There were quite a few spots to choose from when I arrived, but it was full on the weekend. So if you are making a visit on the weekend prepare Plan B just in case.
The first day we arrived I visited Paradise. It’s the southern Visitor Center plus food (blah-not impressed with the offerings or the quality) plus a historic Inn across the parking lot. There is a gift shop upstairs and a Ranger desk to answer questions.
Next day we drove 51 miles from Paradise to Sunrise, the other visitor center located on the northeast side of Mt. Rainier. Now mind you, 51 mountain miles takes about 1.5 hrs in the car. 2 hours in RV and even long if you are making stops to sight-see and take pictures. Also, it was a pretty nerve wrecking drive at some points, with warning signing about falling rock, narrow roads and little to no shoulder with a sheer drop off to the side.
I just take my time and drive at the speed I feel comfortable even if it means blocking traffic. I always use pullouts to let other cars pass since they typically go slightly faster than me.
On my way there I stopped at a few roadside spots to capture the beauty of this place.
Reflection lakes
I hiked Emmons Vista Trail with breathtaking views of the glaciers, White River and small glacial lakes.
On my way back I stopped at reflection Lakes again to walk Aesop and had a scary bear encounter. He jumped out of the side of the road very suddenly and right in front of us. I panicked and ran back maybe a 100ft and then snapped this picture. I wasn’t carrying my bear spray. ☹
Excuse the language, I was really startled and scared.
Here is the picture to explain what happened
Luckily the bear paid us no attention, it seemed he wanted to cross the lake and take a quick swim in the lake. He looked young; momma bear was probably nearby.
Here are a bunch more pictures from the Mt. Rainier trip.
Some of them were taken in Sunrise, some in Paradise around the visitor center trails.
